Disney Dreamlight Valley Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I don’t think there’s many spoilers if any?

Disney Dreamlight Valley (DDLV) is a new favorite game of mine, along with many others. It is like Animal Crossing but has its own aspects; you have a village of Disney Characters who you befriend and level up. Animal Crossing: New Horizons (ACNH) is one of my favorite games and DDLV has brought in aspects I wished Animal Crossing had! There are more quests to do, especially with the friendship of your villagers and interactions you can do. There are more quests and things to do and the $30 early access price is worth it. We don’t know when in 2023 DDLV will be free and I do not regret buying this game at all. I didn’t have money to buy the founders pack but would have waited if I knew it was going on sale because with the Nintendo Switch you cannot upgrade your game.

Speaking of the switch, it crashes quite a bit and has a lot of glitches. Though, I still love the game and am okay with the problems for now since it is early access. There were two other updates after the winter one for the switch. There wasn’t much progress with the update for the crashing. I saw progress with my game freezing on the map and the map going blank except for my character and I cannot exit and the game freezes on the menu a lot and not being able to exit or it crashes. There are new glitches as well. I still recommend this game on switch despite the setbacks.

I can sometimes play for days on end but can get burned out, it is common for me lately with video games. I usually at least log on for dailies and check Scrooge’s shop or earn star coins but lately I haven’t been doing that as much. With the Festive Star Path, I’ve been trying to play more and get all the rewards. I’m not very far on the friendship quests, I’ve been taking the game at my own pace which is something I love you can do. Pumpkins and pumpkin puffs change the game when I unlocked The Forgotten lands a few days ago. I thought okra was a terrific breakthrough but pumpkins are next level.

One of the complaints I have is the storage. Your backpack is tiny at first and takes more money than Stardew Valley to upgrade the bag and star coins are hard to get when you’re in the first two areas. Regular chests only have two rows of inventory and can be expensive to craft with resources at first with how many you can need. I debunked the hack to buy them from Scrooge because you can’t or it got taken out in an update. You have your home storage but that also takes money to upgrade because you need to upgrade your house. My advice, is to have a storage room and put chests by the well of each area with specific items for that area (I don’t do wood right now but may). The thing I love about the inventory is when you’re cooking and crafting, it comes out of your chests and you don’t need it in your inventory which is a complaint I have with ACNH.

Another is, villagers can be hard to level up at first. When they reach level two, you can assign them a role (which cannot be changed later, another complaint) and when hanging out and doing what I assigned them can triple experience for the friendship level. Even when not doing the assigned task they will level up. Favorite gifts are an excellent way to do this and if you have Chez Remy open, that’s a good way too. I have found hanging out to be the easiest for the first friendship quest. Ursula and Ariel (I have not unlocked Ariel) are harder because you can’t assign them to a task, you either have to wait daily to do favorite gifts or grind the level up slowly with regular gifts. Unlimited gifts are another thing I like.

With villagers you unlock, I suggest doing Remy first. Then Moana and Maui, Anna and Elsa and WALL-E last. I say this because Remy unlocks Chez Remy with more cooking and friendship bonuses. Maui will upgrade your pick which is useful for clearing the coral on Dazzle beach. Moana will open her fishing boat. Anna will upgrade the shovel to remove stumps and lastly Elsa will upgrade your pick more. WALL-E is great but he unlocks his garden and not much else. I have not unlocked any of the toy story characters.

Besides the crashing and these issues, I don’t have many other complaints and honestly would still give it five stars for an early access release of the game. I am afraid once it’s out of early access there are going to be a lot of micro-transactions and that would be a major turnoff for me. I am curious how they are going to handle this because it’s going to be a “free-to-play” game when it fully releases and those are usually filled with a bunch of micro-transactions.
